Alaska Governorship Among Most Powerful

The "mainstream" media and other liberals have been busy disparaging Alaska for the past two weeks. I don't think they have so much against the state as they do Governor Sarah Palin, but Alaska is being smeared in the process.

Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal points out some interesting things about Alaska and the governorship of that great state.

For more than two decades Thad Beyle, a political scientist at the University of North Carolina, has maintained an index of "institutional powers" in state offices. He rates governorships on potential length of service, budgetary and appointment authority, veto power and other factors. Mr. Beyle's findings for 2008 rate Alaska at 4.1 on a scale of 5. The national average is 3.5.

Hmmm. I guess the governor of Alaska has quite a bit of authority. Probably generates quite a bit of executive experience for whoever is governor.

The article also points out that while Alaska has a $12 billion budget, the Arkansas budget when Bill Clinton was elected to the presidency was only $2 and among the smallest state budgets in the country.

I guess if Bill Clinton can get away with being the president of the United States, Sarah Palin is certainly qualified to be vice president. At the least.
