Obama to the Left of McGovern

Hugh Hewitt's column at TownHall.com last Friday asserts that Barack Obama is farther to the Left than the radical George McGovern who ran for president in 1972.

As you may recall, McGovern was so liberal, he only won the People's Republic of Massachusetts and D.C.

Hewitt asserts that Obama is even more naive about Islamic terrorism than McGovern was about communism and Vietnam.

He also figures Obama to the Left of McGovern on abortion, gun control, homosexuality, government taxation and spending, and Christianity.

It's true that the 30+ additional years of liberal public schools, liberal "mainstream" media coverage and a general dumbing-down of the American public, we are a far more liberal country than we were in 1972.

But could Obama's Left-of-McGovern position be enough to pull off a win for the mushy-middle McCain?

"Maverick" John McCain is a truly lousy choice for a Republican presidential nominee. Despite this, perhaps the single most important factor that gives him a hope of actually winning in November is his opponent himself.

McCain is no prize to many (most?) Republicans, but when you consider the alternative, McCain suddenly doesn't look as bad...
