Former RC Journal Op/Ed Editor Killed

Ron Bender, who retired a few months ago after 38 years with the Rapid City Journal, was killed yesterday in an accident near Washington D.C.

Longtime Journal news editor Ron Bender was killed Monday in Gaithersburg, Md., in a traffic accident.

According to a story in the Washington Post, Bender was crossing a street on foot toward an area shopping center when he was hit just before he reached the median strip.

The driver of the car that hit Bender left the scene, but witnesses were able to relay to police the make and model of the car, as well as the license plate number.

Ron was my editor for several months when I wrote a column for the Rapid City Journal. Though my interaction with him was limited, he always seemed like a nice, respectful man and I never had a negative experience with him. My prayers go out to his family during this shocking loss.
