Adult stem cell therapy already curing illnesses
WASHINGTON, June 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007 passed the House with a strong bipartisan vote of 247 to 176 yesterday, and will be sent to the President for his signature.
Speaking in favor of the measure, Pelosi said, "According to scientists, including many Nobel Laureates, embryonic stem cell research could unlock the doors to treatments and cures to cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis, and many, many more diseases. It is amazing that someone who opposes embryonic stem cell research could use the line "patients over politics" Patients would prefer that we pursue any and all possible solutions to their diseases. They would get little comfort in the false choice of ESC or Adult Stem Cells. This nation can pursue both. This vote in Congress shows that this nation will allow nationally funded programs for embryonic stem cells after the next presidential election. My bet is that after a few years and the significant advances ESC research is likely to bring, the opposition will have conveniently forgotten the stand they are taking now and will have rethought their current position.
I'm sure some patients would prefer "any and all possible solutions" to their diseases, but the ones who value human life wouldn't. In fact, many people in need of the cures ESC proponents hope for say "Not at the expense of human life."
Our civilization once knew where to draw the line, such as not utilizing the barbaric research gathered by the Nazis as they experimented on human subjects. Many have apparently forgotten that the price of knowledge at all costs can sometimes cost us our humanity altogether.
