Today America faces an economic earthquake and a social tsunami. The lack of a historical perspective may well prove to be the undoing of our nation. Once a people are divorced from their past they live in the Eternal Now and those who set the agenda can always change now. The study of History not only provides context it also provides an endless number of lessons, illustrations, and warnings.
The last day of the 86th legislative session is next Monday. Some are withholding judgment on whether or not the session has been successful until the last gavel falls. In your opinion was it a good, worth-while session or not? I would have to say parts were OK and parts weren’t. But getting the budget into line almost looks miraculous.
These are the best of the best at Dakota Voice last week, including: Westboro Baptist Cult Gets it Dead Wrong; Amazing Victory for Marriage in Maryland; Anchor Babies Present More Problems Than Previously Realized; A Look Inside the Pro-Choice Mindset; Class Warfare: Killing the Goose That Laid the Golden Egg; Entitlements Now Consume All Federal Revenue; Where Does Herman Cain Stand?; and more!
As might be expected, then, the childcare industry is heavily-regulated. adly, however, that the same pains are not taken to protect a class of individuals that is just as weak, vulnerable, and helpless as children. According to a recent report issued by the Department of Health and Human Services, more than 90% of nursing homes employ at least one ex-convict. Why is this happening?
The facedown in Congress on the federal budget must be about principles as well as absolute spending. No drunk will sober up if he only thinks about how much he drinks and not about why. There is nothing more repugnant and flagrantly misplaced in the federal budget than the $360 million taxpayers annually send to Planned Parenthood. If we can’t eliminate this, it means either that the nation is hopelessly lost or that Republicans are weak.
Family Heritage Alliance, BigHorn Canyon Ministries and the Life & Liberty group have teamed up to bring a Save Our Republic Weekend event to Rapid City April 15-16. The event will feature several seminars on the U.S. Constitution, the founding of America, and the heritage of our great nation. Special presenters during the event are John Eidsmoe and Mark Skogerboe. There will be multiple seminars on the constitution and our American heritage, as well as a rally and a Tax Day Tea Party that weekend.
Our Founding Fathers were absolutely adamant about the right of the people to keep and bear arms. They were students of history and understood that from classical antiquity forward, an armed citizenry was essential to the preservation of freedom. Once disarmed, a people either submitted meekly to tyrants or fought in vain. The American Revolution strongly reinforced the historical perspective of the Founding Fathers: the armed American colonists defeated the mighty British Empire.
In recognition of National Sunshine week, South Dakota Secretary of State Jason Gant is continuing his initiative to place more of the state’s records on public view via the Internet. After launching his effort early this week with the addition of “Executive Actions” to his website located at www.sdsos.gov, where Executive Orders and Executive Proclamations are available for on-line viewing, Secretary Gant is now posting all extradition orders filed with his office.
A few days ago we watched “Starting from Zero,” how the Left wants to “start from zero” in remaking America into the glorious socialist utopia it envisions. This next installment from Ed Driscoll called “Forward. Into the Past,” is a good way to summarize “progressivism:” forward into the past–the past of elitism, oppression and lack of freedom. When the Soviet Union has collapsed under the weight of its own bankrupt ideas, this ideology should be forever discredited, right? So the Left needs a new vehicle to advance its corrupt ideas, and finds it in environmentalism.
The second “Americans for Truth Academy” will be held on April 1-2 at the Discover Christian Church in Dublin, OH near Columbus. The event – co-sponsored by Americans for Truth About Homosexuality and Mission America – is“an intensive seminar designed to educate citizens from a conservative perspective on the homosexual-bisexual-transgender agenda.” The Truth Academy Columbus theme: “The ‘Hate’ Labeling of Christians – Why it’s Happening and What We Can Do.”
U.S. House Republicans are, for the most part, really acting like they got the message in last November’s election. The bill passed today 228-192 mostly along party lines, with no Democrats voting for it and 7 Republicans for it. The GOP’s continuing resolution rescinds funds for CPB which also runs PBS. It’s time this unnecessary taxpayer-funded Leftist propaganda machine was deprived of the taxpayer funding.
A reader took umbrage yesterday when I referred to Social Security and similar socialist programs as “ponzi schemes.” Fortuitiously, Dean Zarras wrote a column published in Forbes recently which explains in greater detail why Social Security is a ponzi scheme. What’s that saying about walking and talking like a duck?
Congressman Jeff Duncan of South Carolina introduced legislation aimed at protecting worker’s right to a secret ballot union election this week by prohibiting the National Labor Relations Board from funding a lawsuit against states that protect secret ballot rights. The bill is in response to threats made by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to lead a lawsuit against the states of Utah, South Carolina, Arizona and South Dakota, states where voters have protected their citizens right to secret ballot elections in their state constitution.
There’s a bit of good news out of Maryland. A bill legalizing same-sex marriage, which had been passed in the Senate, has been sent back to the Judiciary Committee, effectively killing it for the year. That may not sound like a huge deal, but when you consider the circumstances leading up to this, it’s nothing short of amazing. For months preceding the non-vote, it was widely assumed that this bill would sail through the Maryland congress, with the signature of Democrat Governor Martin O’Malley guaranteed after passage, but things didn’t go as homosexual activists had planned.
Operatives from the Oakland County Democratic Party in Michigan tried last year to manufacture fake Tea Party candidates to dilute the conservative vote in the 2010 election. Apparently an investigation was conducted and now two Democrats have been indicted on felony forgery and perjury in that scheme. Former Democratic Party Chairman Michael McGuinness and ex-Operations Director Jason Bauer were arraigned yesterday.
We’re all aware of the problem of millions of illegal aliens coming across our borders. We’re all also aware of the millions of illegal aliens who have been here for years. We are also aware that many illegal aliens have “anchor babies” while they are in our country illegally, garnering sympathy and making it more difficult to send them home even after we identify them. But what about those anchor babies who are born to legal visitors to our country? And should they have the same right to American citizenship after having been raised all their lives in a foreign country, possibly with values antithetical to the American way?
Attorney General Marty Jackley announces that South Dakota, Arizona, South Carolina and Utah Attorneys General have by joint letter rejected the National Labor Relation Board’s (NLRB) demand to “stipulate to the unconstitutionality” of our state constitutional amendments that guarantee our citizens the right to vote by secret ballot. “If challenged, our Attorney General’s Office will vigorously defend our South Dakota Constitution,” said AG Marty Jackley.
As I pointed out this morning, our deficit is gargantuan and few in congress are willing to do anything about it. When you have a $1.65 TRILLION budget deficit, cutting $6 billion or $61 billion or even $200 billion just isn’t going to cut it. Jeffrey H. Anderson at the Weekly Standard makes it shockingly clear just how bad unconstitutional entitlement spending has become: it now consumes MORE than our federal revenue.
Out of the latest budget, we have a deficit of about $1.5 TRILLION. No, that’s not the budget–that’s how much of the budget we don’t have money to pay for. Democrats are proposing cuts that would save about about 0.4% of what needs to be cut. Republicans propose a little better at about 4.07% of what needs to be cut, but only Rand Paul’s proposal of $200 billion is starting to get there…and it’s an easy $200 billion to cut!
Though the South Dakota Legislature tabled a measure to move the state from the electoral college to a popular presidential vote, NationalPopularVote.com has just sent out an email to a Hillary Clinton mailing list, urging South Dakotans to call their legislators in support of the bill. Just looking at the liberal groups that support this measure is enough to warn most good people away from it.
I have often said that so-called “progressivism” (a rehabilitative name for liberalism) is not progressive at all, but rather looks backward at the regressive, failed philosophies of the past. “Progressives” want to regress us back to the days when one person or a group of persons (the elite) dictated how the rest would live their lives. This video shows how the Left has long been trying to take Western civilization “back to zero.”
In recognition of National Sunshine week, South Dakota Secretary of State Jason Gant is announcing an initiative to place more of the state’s records on public view via the Internet. “One of the first things that struck me as I took office was the incredible amount of information collected and retained in the Secretary of State’s office. As the State’s official record keeper, it amazed me that we don’t have more of it available on-line. I’m proud to announce during National Sunshine Week that we’re opening the doors to our archives to let the sun shine in.”
CatholicVote.org went out on the streets of Chicago recently during a pro-abortion “Walk for Choice” event to find out from the horses mouth what pro-abortion folks think about abortion. Some might be shocked at this video, not just the profanity but the brazen, “Yeah, so what?!” attitude of the pro-abortion crowd. After all, the pro-abortion lobby puts its best face forward with language like “Safe, legal and rare” and all sorts of other crocodile-tears talk about how, by golly, it’s sad but we need it. But there IS something you can do about it.
