“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!” – Samuel Adams

ALERT: SD Legislature Floating NINE Tax Hike Bills

This alert went out from the South Dakota Tea Party Alliance this morning concerning NINE tax hike bills in the South Dakota Legislature:

Our friends at South Dakota Campaign for Liberty are sending out this alert today on the tax hikes planned by some in the state legislature.  Your action is needed RIGHT AWAY to stop these tax increases!

(Pierre) – Things are getting busy at the Capitol, and the old saying still proves true.  “No one’s life, liberty or property is safe while the Legislature is in session”.  Here are the top two issues.

Tax Hikes

Currently, there are nine different bills before the Legislature to raise taxes.  Everything from increased vehicle fees to so-called “temporary” sales tax hikes.  But experience is demonstrating that there is no such thing as a “temporary” tax hike.  Right now, the legislature is considering another bill (HB 1248) to make permanent a recently passed “temporary” tax increase.  It will almost certainly pass.

That’s why SD Campaign for Liberty strongly opposes ALL tax increases this year.  We’re especially concerned about the sales tax hikes.  Please contact the Legislators listed below and let them know you do not appreciate the current tax hike efforts.  To increase taxes before any serious efforts to cut wasteful government spending have been made is a disservice to the people of South Dakota.

Health Care Freedom

We laud Monday’s Florida decision that found ObamaCare unconstitutional.  South Dakota is part of this case, and it bodes well for all freedom-loving Americans.  Both this year and last year, Campaign for Liberty lead the fight for the South Dakota Health Care Freedom Act.  This bill declares ObamaCare unconstitutional on the state level.  As you may know, our bills did not pass, but we were joined by more than a dozen other states in this effort.  This outcry from the states clearly had an impact on yesterday’s court ruling.  Hats off to each of you who supported the Health Care Freedom Act.

Now the battle for health care freedom continues through the courts.  While there will be further efforts in South Dakota to chip away at ObamaCare, we believe it is important to focus right now on the pressing local issues, especially the proposed tax increases.  Unless we stand firm, these tax hikes will neutralize all the current work to reduce wasteful government spending.

——-Sample Message to Senate Committee——–

Dear Senator,

I hope you will join me in opposing SB 154, and along with any other attempts to pass tax hikes this year.

This is NOT the year to raise tax on South Dakota families, especially in the present economy.  Many of us are tightening our belts.  Why should state government be any different?

The claim that these tax hikes are “temporary” is downright misleading.  The current HB 1248 demonstrates that there really is no such thing as a “temporary” tax hike.  All it takes is another very simple bill to make a “temporary” tax permanent, and this kind of bill is very easy to pass.

I respectfully urge you to vote NO on SB 154.  Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Phone: You can also call and leave a message for the committee members today.  The bill will be in committee tomorrow morning at 7:45.  The number is (605) 773-3821.  You can leave a message for up to two Senators with each call.  Your message can be as simple as “Please ask Senators _________ and _________ to vote NO on SB 154.”

If you’d like to do more, please contact the Legislators who sponsored the sales tax hikes (listed below) and respectfully express your disapproval.

Email:  Once again, feel free to use the sample message below to direct your comments.

——-Sample Message to Tax Hike Sponsors——–

Dear ________

I am very disappointed to see that you have sponsored a sales tax increase.

This is NOT the year to raise tax on South Dakota families, especially in the present economy.  Many of us are tightening our belts.  Why should state government be any different?

The claim that these tax hikes are “temporary” is also disappointing.  The current HB 1248 demonstrates that there really is no such thing as a “temporary” tax hike.  All it takes is another very simple bill to make a “temporary” tax permanent, and this kind of bill is very easy to pass.

I respectfully urge you to withdraw your tax hike bill.  Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Phone: You can also call and leave a message for these tax hike sponsors, Monday through Thursday (the session works on a four day week).  For the Representatives, the number is (605) 773-3851.  For Senators, (605) 773-3821.  You can leave a message for up to two Representatives or Senators with each call.  Your message can be as simple as “Please ask Representatives (or Senators) _________ and _________ to withdraw their tax hike bills.”

Thanks for taking action!
