Israel is the best ally the United States has in the Middle East. Israel is one of the few democracies in that area, and is undoubtedly the most stable one despite the multiple unrelenting attacks that come upon that country from within and without.
Yet yesterday President Barack Obama treated visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu like, well, like Netanyahu was some belligerent dirtbag terrorist.
From Fox News:
For a head of state to visit the White House and not pose for photographers is rare. For a key ally to be left to his own devices while the president withdraws to have dinner in private was, until this week, unheard of.
Yet that is how Benjamin Netanyahu was treated by President Obama on Tuesday night, according to Israeli reports on a trip seen in Jerusalem tonight as a disastrous humiliation.
After failing to extract a written promise of concessions on Jewish settlements, Obama walked out of his meeting with Netanyahu but invited him to stay at the White House, consult with advisers and “let me know if there is anything new,” a congressman who spoke to the prime minister said today.
“It was awful,” the congressman said. One Israeli newspaper called the meeting “a hazing in stages,”poisoned by such mistrust that the Israeli delegation eventually left rather than risk being eavesdropped on a White House phone line. Another said that the prime minister had received “the treatment reserved for the President of Equatorial Guinea.”
The nation of Israel has been under intense fire literally since the day the nation was reborn on May 14, 1948. Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq immediately launched an attack on the fledgling Jewish state, along with support from Yemen, Saudi Arabia and Sudan. The tiny nation managed to defeat this attack and has defeated every military and terrorist attack since then.
Even today, Israel continues to live under the constant threat of terrorist attack and mortar attacks from their immediate neighbors. If anyone truly knows what Americans felt on 911, it is the Israelis.
Some suspect the boorish treatment was designed to weaken Netanyahu at home, to force him to make more concessions to the terrorists and nations who desperately want to see Israel annihilated.
In case it escaped our president, weakening Netanyahu is a very dangerous proposition. His nation is depending on his strength to help keep them safe from terrorist attacks within and from military attacks without. Israel has already made too many concessions to terrorists in desperate attempts to “purchase peace”…only to see attacks renew again soon. Israel needs to defeat terrorism, not try to live with it. And America should be helping them, not trying to trip them up at every opportunity.
It is shameful for an American president to so insult and belittle the leader of a fellow democracy, a strong ally of the United States. The fact that Netanyahu is a world-class leader of great wisdom and determination makes the treatment even more egregious.
Sadly, though, what can we expect of a president who chums around with Marxist thugs; bows to foreign dictators; hires virulent racists and admitted communists, Marxists and other anti-Americans in his administration; views terrorists as “misunderstood persons;” allows a Marxist domestic terrorist to launch his political career; praises Islamic terrorists; hangs with Islamic extremists; and has terrorists praying for him?
With friends and associates like this, some hatred of Jews and Israel just has to rub off.
Perhaps if Obama would start hanging around with some people who love freedom more and totalitarianism less, he might develop more appreciation for our good friend Israel…and maybe even more appreciation for his own country.
