Shifting Gears: Land Rising Despite Melting Glaciers

Remember how we’ve been told by Al Gore and his disciples ad nauseam of how man-made global warming is going to cause the ice caps and glaciers to melt, which will cause the ocean to rise, which will put our coastal cities underwater?

Well, maybe not.

From the New York Times:

Morgan DeBoer, a property owner, opened a nine-hole golf course at the mouth of Glacier Bay in 1998, on land that was underwater when his family first settled here 50 years ago.

“The highest tides of the year would come into what is now my driving range area,” Mr. DeBoer said.

Now, with the high-tide line receding even farther, he is contemplating adding another nine holes.

“It just keeps rising,” he said.

The geology is complex, but it boils down to this: Relieved of billions of tons of glacial weight, the land has risen much as a cushion regains its shape after someone gets up from a couch. The land is ascending so fast that the rising seas — a ubiquitous byproduct of global warming — cannot keep pace. As a result, the relative sea level is falling, at a rate “among the highest ever recorded,” according to a 2007 report by a panel of experts convened by Mayor Bruce Botelho of Juneau.

Greenland and a few other places have experienced similar effects from widespread glacial melting that began more than 200 years ago, geologists say. But, they say, the effects are more noticeable in and near Juneau, where most glaciers are retreating 30 feet a year or more.

Don’t worry, though. You’re not losing your mind. The New York Times hasn’t suddenly changed due to an attack of conscience into telling the truth.  They’re only telling a little of the truth that would have gotten out sooner or later.

You’ll notice that this article is still full of gloom and doom and Gore-esq apocalypse.  ”Yeah, maybe the coastlines won’t be underwater like we said they would…but streams are going to dry up, species will die…AND IT’S ALL THE CAPITALIST’S FAULT!”

One thing is for sure: these “scientists” who think they have it all figured out (especially things that have not been scientifically observed and measured before, and things that may not happen for a hundred years or more…if at all) don’t know nearly what they think they know.

Don’t put your faith in “scientists” with an agenda, especially when their pronouncements don’t pass muster with common sense.

Climate change is a natural, cyclic phenomenon, and there’s nothing we can do about it but roll with the punches and adapt.  Anyone who tells you differently is looking to lighten your pockets to fill their own.
