Chris Matthews: West Point Military Academy is ‘Enemy Camp’

You know, I’ve long said that many of these ultra-Leftist America-hating liberals have more sympathy with America’s enemies than they do with America and Americans.

Tonight we may have seen a disturbing illustration of that contention.

Chris Matthews of MSNBC, one of the most liberal of the liberal “mainstream” media, said some remarkable things about President Obama’s speech tonight at the West Point Army academy on Afghanistan.

“I think it’s true of most wars. They start with a lot of excitement. I remember the scene in ‘Gone with the Wind’ where the rebels are so excited about going to war with the North, a country they can’t beat because of its industrial advantage and population advantage. They were going to lose that war eventually.

“It seems like in this case, there isn’t a lot of excitement. I watched the cadets, they were young kids, men and women who were committed to serving their country professionally it must be said, as officers. And, I didn’t see much excitement. But among the older people there, I saw, if not resentment, skepticism. I didn’t see a lot of warmth in that crowd out there. The president chose to address tonight and I thought it was interesting. He went to maybe the enemy camp tonight to make his case.”

A lot of interesting stuff here, in less than a minute’s time.

Is Matthews saying the war in Afghanistan against the terrorists is a war we can’t win?   Well, we certainly won’t with a defeatist attitude like that!

Matthews said he saw some skepticism, and acted like he wasn’t sure why.  As someone who served 10 years in the U.S. military under three presidents, I have some idea.  Having served under a very good one (Ronald Reagan) and a very bad one (Bill Clinton), these military folks may just be skeptical that President Obama is going to back them when the fur flies, or if he’s going to let them take care of business in Afghanistan and Iraq.

What I found most interesting was that Matthews said Obama had “went to the enemy camp” to make this speech.  The United States Army academy is “the enemy camp”?

Is Matthews saying that Obama sees the U.S. military as the enemy?  That’s a pretty strong statement, but given President Obama’s  perpetual penchant for bowing to other countries and their leaders, his Apologizing for America Tour, his unwillingness to defend the use of U.S. military force, his loathing of our Constitution, his embrace of anti-American thugs, his association with foreign and domestic terrorists, and his packing of our government with communists and other anti-Americans, perhaps Matthews has a point.

Or is Matthews saying that he himself (Matthews) considers the U.S. Army the enemy?   With Matthews’ long track record of going easy on our enemies and hostile toward the most patriotic among us, perhaps this is what he means when he says the West Point academy is “the enemy camp.”

I know the truth seems to have escaped Matthews and many other on the Left, but come on: the U.S. military is our friend, and they are fighting the enemy (you know, the bad guys who like to target civilians and such) to keep us and our allies safe.

One thing is for sure: when mindless liberals like Mattthews have a mic, you’re going to hear some pretty outrageous things.

Tim Russert was a proffesional reporter. He reported the news, not make the news.
Chris Mattews is not only a mindless liberal but a classical jerk.
Making a statement that West Point is an enemy camp should be consider treason.
West Point is the United States Army Academy.
MSNBC should fire him immediatly or I will support a total boycott to all advertisers of MSNBC
and I will communicate with every one I know to make sure this happens.
  • Academy Cadet
As a current Cadet at a Service Academy, I can say with certainty that it was an "enemy camp". While the military as a whole is comprised of all types of political opinions, the Academies tend to be majority republican. Just bring up President Obama and the insults begin to fly, despite the fact that it is our job to support the President. So, the fact that Obama was a President that they didn't vote for combined with a lack of professionalism – the audience which should have been his biggest supporters became that of the “enemy”.

Disclaimer: Academy Cadets are great people and will one day be great officers – so when I agree that they are the “enemy” it is not due to lack of character or true malicious intent. However, it’s easy to let the immaturity of youth get in the way of understanding big picture ideas, such as supporting the President no matter who you voted for.
  • As a military academy cadet you seem to have a poor understanding of the military's role in our republic. When I enlisted in the Army I took an oath as do all American service personnel. That oath was to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. No oath is given to the commander-in-chief except to obey "lawful orders."

Obama has demonstrated an antipathy to the Constitution and the unique American culture. A loyal soldier or sailor places the Constitution above personalities. When you talk about "supporting the president" I am left to wonder what that means to you. Is there any point at which you would not support the president as a future military officer?

Makes you wonder if all of Chris Mathews' understanding of history comes from fictional accounts such as "Gone With the Wind."

COM'ON ! WHY DO U WANT TO DESTROY THIS BRILLIANT ANALOGY. HE DOES NOT IN NO WAY EQUAL THE WEST POINT AS REALLY THE ' ENEMY CAMP'. THE TRUTH IS THAT, U WILLFULLY DECIDE NOT TO GET IT.

M Morgan plays the race card. What a surprise. According to Libs, if you disagree with anything Obama does then you are a racist. Maybe the Libs should think back 8 years to 9/11/01. We didn't start the war in Afghanistan, the terrorists brought it to us first. Now 8 years later the Libs want us to forget that 9/11 ever happened and not go after those responsible. With Obama in the White House, another 9/11 is sure to happen. Appeasement doesn't work, so get a clue M Morgan.

Matthews and m.s.n.b.c. should be shut up.In any country besides the U.S. they would be.Alot of times its best to keep your mouth shut otherwise you are going to prove your ignorance.
  • M Morgan
More blah blah blah. Apparently Bob Ellis wasn't watching or listening to the same speech as the rest of us. But alas.. it wouldn't matter. Regardless what Our President says, does, wears, breathes, eats, etc. .....there will always be the naysayers out there spitting their negativity because that cannot stand the fact that we have a man of color as our Commander In Chief.
  • Carrie_K_Hutchens
Racism is having to dwell on the color of Obama's skin! Guess that makes you a racist M Morgan, because you apparently can't see anything beyond his skin color.
  • mrsb
It's amazing how the people who bring up the color of Obama's skin the most are his "supporters". Maybe they are the ones who aren't color blind! Those who disagree with him tend to stick to attacking the issues and policies, not the man. Maybe the left will learn how to do that some day.
  • mrsb8
And there will always be those who cannot defend actions like this who simply throw down the race card in hopes that anyone who dissents will go away. Funny, I thought the "you're either with us or against us" mentality was supposed to end when Bush left office.
  • Bannister
Matthews is using the term "enemy camp" in regard the response to Obama's policy, i.e. the idea, as he saw it.

Is our military supposed to be comprised of automatons or thinking people who follow lawful orders even if they disagree with them?

What's next on the faux outrage agenda?
  • Minnesota
Chris Matthews was clearly critical of the President's view that there should be any escalation of this war effort. The context was within the framework of military= republicanism; peace= democratic (his party) when he referred to the military acadamy as "enemy camp." Remember that context is key when scrutinizing anybody, especially when they are speaking off the cuff. Give this faux controversy a rest and save the ammo for the really strong arguments that could be made against the media.
  • mrsb
Maybe that is what Matthews meant but we really don't know for sure. Yes, context is key but wording does and should count. If he meant that the military tends to lean more toward conservatism/Republicans then say that, don't ever call anyone in our military the enemy. Sorry, no "faux controversy" here. Matthews needs to choose his words more carefully when talking about the men and women who volunteer to defend this country so he can sit behind a microphone and criticize it.
  • I think you meant your formula to be defending our country=Republican; cowardice and America-bashing=Democrat. That's usually the way things go.
  • MBK
I thought the military was suppossed to be politically neutral. It is here to protect and defend the Constitution and serve the Commander in Chief no matter what. Im sure these cadets (who volunteered in a time of war) are more than eager to serve their country when it is in need. This guy needs to reassess his vision or stop seeking fame by saying controversial things that probably even he doesn't believe.

Chris Matthews is an utter moron and has been for a long time.
  • P.G.
I'm sure there's a place for Matthews in Venezuela or Cuba. Why doesn't he take his America-Hating *** out of here!
  • rdahlen
this guy is a real dud,,speaking about a great school and he needs his head examined
