Rapid City Festival of Lights Parade

Rapid City Fire Department float

Rapid City Fire Department float

The annual Rapid City Festival of Lights Parade was held early this evening in downtown Rapid City.

There were dozens of floats in the event all lit up for the holidays.

There is a contest where judges award prizes for the best floats, but I saw so many good ones tonight, I know that there job will be very difficult.  The results should be in the Rapid City Journal tomorrow morning.

I’ve included a slideshow below that features some of the best ones.  You can click on the thumbnails to see larger versions of them.

I honestly can’t say which one I liked best, but being a former Air Force trooper, I really liked the B-1 float from Ellsworth Air Force Base (the base usually places well every year).  The B-1 bomber in lights tilts from side to side as it is pulled along and is very impressive.

I also liked the Rapid City Fire Department float which, as you see in the pic above, would frequently shoot flames from inside a house. It was a very exciting float.

My daughter liked a group who rode by on horses with Christmas lights on the horses and the riders; one of the riders had their hors rear up on its hind legs and walk a few steps.  Since she is a horse enthusiast, there could be no other she would favor more highly.

Several area churches also had good floats, including Open Bible Christian Center, Zion Lutheran, Blessed Sacrament and more.  Also Christian radio station KSLT, Rapid City Christian School and more.

A lot of people put a lot of work into these and are to be commended for their efforts. Despite the 31 degree weather, it was worth standing in the cold for an hour to watch.

Ah! Thanks, Bob, for sharing this. I love Christmas lights, and the parade is beautiful, if only in photographs.

I'm with you, that the B-1 float was a great one. I was born and raised in Abilene, Texas, home of Dyess Air Force base and the B-1 bomber, and I tell you, there is no airplane with a more gorgeous profile than that of the B-1. People who have never seen it fly, can't imagine. It's a beautiful war plane.

I also really liked the fire department's float - very, very cool!
  • Yes, it's an impressive heavy bomber. The good Lord knows I've had a lot of time to admire it, having spent too many hours walking around and guarding those things during alerts while they loaded nukes on them, and during President George H.W. Bush's drawdown of our alert nuclear forces. Driving around Rapid City, we frequently see them flying around doing touch-and-go's.
