The Headline Not Expected

by Carrie K. Hutchens

The headlines seem full of road rage murders and men and women killing their mates and babies, as though we, as a society, have walked through a dark door into a realm where there is no value left on life. Then comes the headline of all headlines. The headline not expected. The one that brings the unexpected tears that seem to go on forever.

Matt Ziesel is a 15 year old football player for Benton High School in St. Joseph, MO.

KMBC’s coverage of the game states:

“On Monday night, the Benton Cardinals football team was losing its game against Maryville.

“Looking back, it’s a great game. At the time we were down 46 to nothing and it was probably the worst-looking game I’ve ever seen as a coach,” Benton Coach Dan McCamy told KMBC’s Bev Chapman.”

According to KMBC, McCamy made a decision that won’t soon be forgotten.

“Have you always wanted to play football?” Chapman asked Ziesel.

“Yes, I do play good,” Ziesel said.”

Ziesel was given the ball and he made the one and only Benton Cardinal’s touch down for that night. A touch down that saw Ziesel’s team mates running up the field with him and there to share his special moment.

However, Marysville’s teams was there as well. The night was full of champions and football team members with hearts of gold.

Matt Ziesel has Down Syndrome.

Marysville, instead of walking away with a shut-out, ran a special play for a special young man.

KMBC’s “High School Player’s Inspiring Touchdown” is a must read and the video a must see!

Grab the box of tissues first though.

Quite a story. What does the coach tell Mattie next week and the week after and next week after that if the game is close and Mattie wants to play, because the coach set it up so that Mattie now actually thinks he is talented. Mattie won't understand, because he was deceived the first time around. While it may be one of those short term feel good stories to us the viewers, is really right to deceive Mattie, who surely will be perplexed when he doesn't get to play in the rest of the games. Downs syndrome or not, good intentions or not, is it a good life lesson ?

Here's what the coach can say to Mattie... "Mattie, you got to make a touch down. Now we have to give everyone else a chance, don't you think?"

Carrie I think a 15y.o.boy should be told the truth. The coach should have told him that everyone contributes to the team in different ways. Everyone has strenghs and weakness. Tell Mattie that we are all different and that Mattie has a gift of inspiration not found in many. That is all truthful. To me, that is something Mattie can build on for the rest of his life. It gives him validity. Scoring a fake touchdown doesn't and you're still left with what to say to him next week.Even saying 'we have to give everyone a chance' is not truthful, because after everyone is given that chance, you will still have to explain to him why he can't play.I believe there are ways to honstly build people up, with out false hopes. Mattie is no different from the player one the fourth string who won't get to play either. They both should be told their contribution is not scoring fake touchdowns, but in other areas that are neceesary for a team to be a team.

Oh... and by the way, Brian... the coach may tell him all those things on a daily basis! And... that wasn't a fake touchdown. It was a gift. It was a touchdown given to him. A touchdown that showed the spirit and heart of his fellow team mates and the heart and spirit of those on the other team. It gave them all a chance to feel compassion for another human being. It gave them a chance to feel what it feels like to do something so wondrous for another person, rather than to live SELFISHLY!!!

I never said people should not be given a moment of happiness. I never said people shouldn't be given the chance to show compassion. It was indeed a fake , contrived touchdown and a gift, but I think the best gift you can give a person is truth and honesty.Again, what about the third or fourth string player, who may never get in a game. Do we set up contived situations for them as well because they are are, like Mattie, less gifted than the first string players. Why should Mattie be treated any differently from them.

The best gift you can give Mattie is treat him like every other 15 year old.Isn't that what he really wants-just to be one of the group ? Does he want to be singled out as someone who 'needs' or ' should be' given special compassion or attention ?

Does he want to be thought of as a teenager with Downs Syndrome or does he want to be thought of as just another 'one of the guys' ? Isn't that why he joined the team ? I know you feel sorry for him which drives your compassion, but Mattie seems quite well adjusted to me and I think he got that way by 'special favors' not given to him. The little, underdeveloped fourth string player didn't get those favors either. Lets give them both the respect they are due.

So, you believe we should never give a person their moment of happiness? Never! Because life is going to hit them in the face and they might never have another such special moment!

Brian, what are your thoughts about letting kids believe there is a Santa Claus? Do you worry about that deceit, because there isn't a specific character in a red suit, that has reindeers that pulls his sleigh through the sky on Christmas Eve?
  • Carrie_K_Hutchens
Brian, we all need a POSITIVE fix now and again! We all need a chance to make our dream come true, if only briefly! At least Mattie can say he made a touch down, because he did! And look at all those who were willing to let him have his dream come true!
  • That made my day a little brighter. Thanks, Carrie.
