Iran is Right for a Change
It’s not often that I find myself agreeing with an antisemitic, terrorism-supporting, belligerent despot, but apparently anything is possible.
From Haaretz:
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad dismissed international sanctions against Iran as a “childish idea” on Friday as he officially launched a natural gas project in the Gulf, Iranian media reported.
His comments came a day after U.S. President Barack Obama said he was extending economic sanctions against Tehran as it continued to pose an “extraordinary threat” to the national security, foreign policy and economy of the United States.
I have to agree. Economic sanctions against belligerent hellhole bastions of darkness like Iran have always been a childish response to their evil.
Economic sanctions can be a useful tool of international policy, provided the target nation cares anything at all about the economic prosperity of its citizens. The repressive stance the Iranian government has taken against its own people for decades illustrates that this is not the case for that country. To those in power in Iran, the people are fodder, nothing more.
Iran makes enough oil money that they don’t have to worry about silly “economic sanctions” too much. They have wealth left over to maintain their status as the lead sponsor of terrorism around the world, so threats of economic sanctions mean little to Ahmadinejad.
Making empty threats that have little or no effect over your enemy is childish.
Paralyzing reticence to deal with a deadly threat is even more childish.
Children can run away from a threat; grownups deal decisively with threats.
So far, the entire world has–like pre-World War II Europe–been pretending that if we just ignore the threat of Iran’s terrorism and nuclear ambitions, that threat will just go away.
Children play make-believe; national leaders charged with protecting the people can’t afford to.
How long will it take world leaders to wake up to this cold, hard truth? The clock is down to the final seconds before the buzzer goes off.
