Obama Interior Nominee Wants to Re-Ban Offshore Drilling

oilplatformCNS News reports President-Elect Barack Obama’s Interior Secretary nominee Senator Ken Salazar intends to restore the only-recently-lifted ban on some offshore drilling for oil.

(Sigh)

I wonder how long it will take for the regular Americans who were duped into voting for Obama (because of the enthusiasm, euphoria, etc.) to realize they have made a terrible, terrible error with regard to our nation’s welfare…

Bob, you are in favor of drilling for oil both off shore and in Alaska, right? What happens when those supplies are gone?
  • Yes I am.

And when those supplies are gone in 30 years or more, we'll use still other sources which are yet untapped or even undiscovered.

And who knows; by that time, we might actually have a more viable power supply/system. But for now, we do not, and none is on the horizon for practical use.

So we really should stop being such complete morons and shooting ourselves in the foot.

Of course if we loathe our country and want to see it achieve Third World status, we can continue these efforts to strangle ourselves, our progress and our prosperity.

You're right, no realistic alternatives are on the horizon yet. And I don't think a sudden increase in the supply of gas coupled with a sudden decrease in its price will get us there any faster. I hope you don't think I loathe America; I'm just someone who believes that offshore drilling is a very short-term solution to a very long-term problem.
  • No, the increased supply will not bring on an alternative energy source/system any faster, but it would provide greater stability for our economy, which also means less suffering and deprivation (e.g. job losses, high food prices, etc.).

Some people DO loathe America and want to see her laid low--and quite a number of them have American citizenship. And inadequate access to an unfettered energy supply is one of the ways they would like to see that happen.

Access to natural resources and the importance of that to a nation's health and strength go back practically to the beginning of civilization itself. One noteworthy example was in WWII--Hitler took control of some other nations to ensure a ready oil supply...and we bombed those oil fields, etc. out of existence to make him weaker so we could defeat him in the end.

The Left likes to make our access to oil sound petty and shameful. In truth, it is no more shameful that an ancient city's need to have access to cropland and a fresh water supply in case of a siege. Only fools would cheat themselves out of the means to keep the engine of civilization and life itself going.
