Gun Control Analysis of Virginia Tech Murders Premature

By Carrie K. Hutchens

The Virginia Tech campus killing spree that took so many innocent lives is prominent in the news as is to be expected. Likewise prominent -- some in the news media seem to be looking to blame someone before all the facts are in and it is getting quite annoying. Not only that, we are being told that we will now be debating the gun control issue again. And we will be doing that because the media says we will? We are their puppets as we sit hanging on their every word?

What happened on that campus was a horrific act that brings horror and tremendous sadness and loss to not only a community, but to the nation. Why was the university and police not able to stop the massacre? It is easy to blame them for not locking down the school immediately upon discovering the first murders, as though immediately can be accomplished as quickly as implied. Yes, maybe if it had been possible, lives would have been saved. Maybe if the officers had "all" the information then, rather than learning it later, they would have been able to take steps to bring us to a different outcome. But, as it stands now, it doesn't appear they had information that would have led them to believe there was further danger to anyone on campus.

How would the news media feel if people heard the first line of their report and immediately jumped on the "assume and fault find wagon" and judge their report without allowing them to fully give it? That is what is being done to the police. Judgments are being made prior to allowing the law enforcement and university officials to complete their investigation. And this serves what purpose?

In the Duke lacrosse case, there were those who jumped on the wagon and caused wrongful assumptions to be made towards three innocent young college men. Are we headed there again? Will officials be made to look guilty of something -- anything -- just so some of the media personnel will have something to talk about? Just so one media person can try to top another? Just show biz right?

As for the gun control issue, taking advantage of this case to stir the fires on that is wrong!

People need to realize that if someone has the intent to kill with a gun, guns can be obtained off the street. Gun control isn't going to stop that from happening. All gun control does is make it easier for those with criminal intent to be armed over and above the lawbiding citizens. Guns in responsible hands is not the problem. The problem is with the people who use them to harm others. Killers without a gun, could no doubt simply find another means to accomplish their dark wish.

We need to honor these fallen innocents, their family and friends by reporting their story in a fair and true fashion. The truth that includes giving respect to the law enforcement and university officials as they attempt to complete a thorough investigation. After all, it is the truth that matters and may one day save the lives of others -- not the hype.
