THE WORLD HAS GONE MAD

Second Carts Will Get You Every Time

By Carrie K. Hutchens

Officer Nicholas Evans of the Bradenton Police Department (Bradenton, Florida) is the police officer that pulled a homeless woman's cart along side his patrol car after arresting her so that she would not lose all her worldly possessions. Appalled for his compassion by some, others (supervisors and fellow officers) seemed to feel his actions were inappropriate. Looks like the opinion of the "others" won out.

According to the Ledger, Officer Evans was suspended without pay. "'Shopping Cart Caper' Officer Suspended" (February 4, 2007) . Of course, the article says he was suspended for pulling another cart. Those second carts will get you every time!

Thirty working days without pay seems more than a little harsh to me. I'd be interested in knowing what the days off would be for something truly serious? And no, I don't feel pulling a cart without need is on the truly serious list. It falls under a "let's get this straight -- we don't pull carts" lecture in a supervisor's office. But thirty working days without pay is totally over the edge. Trying to force the officer out? Sure sounds like it.

I do find it amusing that the department officials want it made clear it wasn't the homeless woman's cart that is at the bottom of the suspension. Guess this official thought the public might be outraged. Guess what. There is outrage. It's definitely a sad and sorry shame when a good deed is rewarded with punishment. Police officers need all the good PR they can get. Whatever good PR the Bradenton Police Department might have gotten, they flushed it down the toilet. Hope that 30 working days was worth what they have lost.
