THE WORLD HAS GONE MAD

Time Out for All

By Carrie K. Hutchens

California's Lieber is pushing for a law that bans spankings of children below the age of four. Right on the heels of her bill comes an interesting event. "Toddler's Temper Ousts Family From Plane" (January 23, 2007) . That's right, a toddler appearing to be out of control. A toddler that is reported as having been, "... climbing under the seat and hitting the parents and wouldn't get in her seat". A toddler that held up an entire flight for the other 112 passengers. And this was acceptable behavior?

Society shouldn't have to endure a time out at the hands of a toddler.

This incident, which took place in Orlando, Florida, is a prime example that three and four year olds out of control isn't simply a matter of child's play. If parents couldn't readily get this child under control, what might have taken place if it were another child that so upset her? It is a fair question to ask.

Time out is marvelous for those children it works for, but when it becomes obvious that it isn't working and others are paying a price for inappropriate behavior, it's time to look for a new method. It is time to look for that method, before the child has become convinced he (or she) has no consequences to face while having a "right" to demand, take and expect what is not any individual's right of expectation.

Some suggest we should avoid exposing children to situations, such as shopping trips, that end in the child acting badly. That's easy for those who have the money to hire nannies, babysitters, daycare or whatever, but what about the parents that don't have that luxury? More importantly, what does that teach the children? When would they learn they must control their behavior? And what about if they felt they couldn't control a situation -- that they should avoid it, rather than try to find a turn solution?

Some would also suggest, like Governor Schwarzenegger, that taking away play time is a good method. In some cases, it truly is. Won't deny that. However, what Gov. Schwarzenegger is forgetting is that not all children have a playtime equal to children such as his. Not all children have the opportunity for special outings that would be traumatic to miss. But even that doesn't matter. What about the children of privilege that have turned on their own family?

Raising children is not easy! It's a learn as you go proposition with the opportunity for many mistakes to be made on both sides. However, there is one thing that is "a for sure" -- parents are meant to be in the seat of authority and to teach their children to respect the rules and rights of others. No child should ever be raised to believe the world centers around him or her. It does not. What happens when the child is faced with that reality? Whatever happens -- no favor was done to that child by presenting such a fantasy as supposed reality.

Maybe we ought to put all those adults on a flight delayed by a toddler throwing a temper tantrum but with one difference. The difference being that no adult can get off the plane and the toddler won't be removed and it won't matter how urgent it is for them to be at their destination on time.

Maybe then they will get a hint of reality...

No child was ever meant to be at the controls and to have the free opportunity to put themselves and others into danger.

No child was ever meant to be able to put society into time out as they -- the child -- vent uncontrollably.

Children are suppose to be under the care of the adults.

Children are suppose to be nurtured and taught and guided into adulthood.

Any adult who thinks the child rules -- has no business in authority! Centuries have proven that to be an absolute! If centuries doesn't register as proof and a reason -- maybe suffering the results will!
