A History of Climate Change

Bruce Bartlett's latest column discusses some of the documentary evidence that climate change has been going on for millennia, even back into the B.C. era. Here is just one example:

Plato’s student, Aristotle, who lived from 384 BC to 322 BC, also recorded evidence of global warming in his work, “Meteorologica.” He noted that in the time of the Trojan War, the land of Argos was marshy and unarable, while that of Mycenae was temperate and fertile. “But now the opposite is the case,” Aristotle wrote. “The land of Mycenae has become completely dry and barren, while the Argive land that was formerly barren, owing to the water has now become fruitful.” He observed the same phenomenon elsewhere covering large regions and nations.

The hysterical calls from Al Gore and others for us to "do something" about "global warming" aren't based on sound science. At best, they've taken particular notice of a meteorological phenomenon and because of their ideological bent against business, capitalism and the West in general, believe mankind is destroying their precious Gaia.

Even if "global warming" is actually occurring, it's not only pretentious to believe that we could be causing it, the theory of an anthropogenic cause is gravely undermined by the evidence that points to natural climate change over time.

Bob, I totally agree with you. It's pretty arrogant of any human being to think we have the power to change climate. What's more, it's a commonly known fact that the sun is coming closer to the earth each year, so it's normal for the globe to warm up. As some have claimed, Global Warming has become a religeon, NOT a scientific study.

Wow. You are both so ignorant. I pity you.

You know what happens when you live in a bubble? The bubble is bound to pop..I feel sorry for you that you are so ignorant. But I am also irritated that you make the work of others (those unlike you, who actually have souls, and work to protect humanity) more difficult.I truly pity you. For one day soon, you are in for a rude awakening.

I have to confess that I'm completely baffled about what bubble you're talking about.

If you mean that my pursuit of reliable information insulates me from politically correct herd movements like man-made global warming, you're probably right.

And I'm quite satisfied to make it difficult for anti-American, anti-West, anti-capitalism people to scuttle American productivity for the sake of a poorly constructed myth.

When someday we realize (just like the impending ice age that never happened) that this whole man-made global warming thing was a farce, I don't think it'll be me that's in for a rude awakening.

Until then, sweet dreams, anonymous.
