The True Night of the Living Dead

By Carrie K. Hutchens

Wesley J. Smith's article, "Experimenting with live patients - Some experts think it's OK to use vegetative human subjects", appearing in the SFGate.com online edition on October 22, 2006, left me with cold chills and haunting thoughts, but it didn't stop there. Yesterday, I happened upon a site that was even more upsetting, if that is possible. I found, A Presentation by James Parks -- Medical Ethics and "The Living Cadaver: Medical Uses of Permanently Unconscious Bodies". Pieces of fiction?

When the movie "Night of the Living Dead" first came out, I'm sure the concept seemed like some impossible fantasy story to be told around a campfire for a brief ole scary moment. Did anyone suppose it would ever become a suggested reality? Shock! Shock! It is now on the drawing board and boldly being presented by some as quite ethical. Say what?

I don't know who is teaching ethics to these people or where the textbooks came from, but it sounds as though we have moved right into a King/Koontz/Saul novel without even knowing it was on the bookshelves for sale. One day we woke up and we were in someone else's world, playing by foreign rules that lacked any familiar reasoning abilities.

Doesn't anyone find it a bit curious how so many are offended because Mel Gibson had a few too many and allegedly said the "f" word and made racial slurs, while not being likewise concerned about how the disabled, elderly and other vulnerable ones are spoken to and about? Where are all these offended people when it comes to human beings being referred to as house plants and vegetables and "living cadavers"? The former is offensive and the latter is politically correct? Excuse me, if I decide not to ride in the same elevator. Let me off at the next floor, it has to be saner than the reasoning in that box of thought.

Mel Gibson was at least drunk when his mouth got a little too busy spouting inappropriate comments. What is the excuse of these alleged experts on ethics, scientists, doctors, politicians, activists, hospice owners et al that seem to think human-ness left the moment the body and/or mind stopped being perfect? But then... because they are cold and calculatingly making their rude and crude determination about the worthiness of other peoples' lives, they are somehow more sophisticated and evolved, so theirs are not discriminating slurs? I beg to pardon!

When we start accepting that human life is merely cells or an empty body waiting to be harvested, we have dehumanized ourselves. After all, respect for life and compassion are two things that make us human. Without them, we might as well be robots without a heart and soul. Perhaps that is down the line as well, as we are further taught that emotions are useless and do nothing but get in the way in this new evolution that some are striving so desperately to create.

Hitler started out getting rid of the disabled, but duh... this type of thing couldn't be happening again, now could it? Oh no, we are much too smart for that to slip by us. This is entirely different. Yeah right! Instead of the LIVE concentration camp prisoners being experimented on, it will be the LIVE cadavers. Live cadavers who may or may not feel every single thing done to them, just like those before them.

It is all so beyond belief!

The diagnosis of PVS has been proven wrong too many times to trust the diagnosis. That's a proven fact! Yet, there are those who are ready to assume such a diagnosis as being an immediate elevation to "living cadaver"?

What happens if the diagnosis was wrong and the person starts coming out of whatever state of being they were in after harvesting or experimentation has started? They gonna bang the person over the head or inject them with bunches of drugs to kill off brain cells, and simply call it an "oooops"?

Research has, and is, showing that often people that are actually in there are merely dormant as they heal. And while some researchers are discovering that the brain has the ability to repair, detour, delegate and compensate -- the death squad wants to call these people LIVING CADAVERS to harvest and/or experiment on? Who wins?

Do the one researchers get the chance to learn how to help the brain repair at a faster pace and thereby get these people back, or do the body snatcher ghouls get to grab the body once some doctor (with or without harvesting/experimental stock) somewhere yells, "PVS"!?!?

None of this is to be taken lightly!

Life -- the gift given to us -- is precious! Rather than deciding who isn't worthy of living, maybe we should be deciding how to make life worthy for all who are!

There was a time (assumed as absolute) that a stroke was the end of it all (quality life) for someone (anyone) experiencing one. All gone and no coming back. It has since been learned that was a wrongful assumption. So, with all our knowledge, and it having been proven to us over and over again that we make all these medical strives, to make things happen that we once thought impossible -- why are some so ready to say it "ain't" so and try to define any as "Living Cadavers"? What is their "true" agenda? To purify the world at the expense of those they deem less worthy?

Who are these people that are striving to redefine all that we have perceived as being human-like? What power do they hold? Will they become only a story to be told around a campfire to cause a shiver or two, or the reality of life as it will become with acceptance of the "Living Cadavers" in our true night of nightmares and the death of all that we were born to be?
