Wal-mart and
the American Way
By Carrie Hutchens On a recent visit to Wal-Mart -- which is a bad place for me to be when bored -- I picked up a cup and said I bet it was from China. It was. So were the next several items I checked. And this is the store that use to boast of taking such pride in carrying "made in the USA" products? Now I was on a mission, I had to find something made in the USA. I wasn't leaving until I did. Drinking glass. "Made in China" Silverware. "Made in China" Toothpicks. "Made in China" Sheets. "Made in China" Blankets. "Made in China" Pillow thingy. "Made in China and stuffed in the USA" Blanket. "Made in Brazil" Matches. "Made in the USA" Bathroom accessories. "Made in China" Down the toy aisle. "Made in China" "Made in China" "Made in China" "Made in China" UNO cards. "Made in the USA" More toys. "Made in China" Stuff animals. "Made in China" Coloring book. "Made in the USA" Slippers. "Made in China" Calculator. "Made in China" Ceramic depiction of the Last Supper. "Made in China" Ceramic Angel. "Made in China" By this time, I was bummed out and wondering why not change the name to China-Mart. It would be a truer name. Wal-Mart came into this town and killed off a big grocery store and smaller ones, too. My understanding is that other businesses were sent down the tubes, and there sets the big chain store with a majority of beaten down employees. Believe me, you wouldn't want to shop at this store, unless you had no other choice. Oh! I forgot. We don't have much other choice for in-town shopping. No wonder the people in this town (with exception) look so defeated and frustrated. They have been forced into servitude by a chain store that sells products made mostly everywhere but in the USA. Wonder if this is what Sam would have ever considered a possibility or allowed if he saw it happening? Wal-Mart and the America Way? What page of the history book is that on?
